The Joy of Journaling
I have always kept journals from a young age. They haven’t always been used for the purpose of writing “Dear Diary today I…….” but as a place to keep my thoughts, pictures and ideas in one place. In my early 20’s I had an emotional moment and threw out all of the journals I had written as a teenager. I regret it now because I think they would be funny to read and I think my daughters would have a good laugh. My Journals were covered in bubble writing (remember puff paints?), smelly stickers and pictures cut out of smash hits and dolly magazines. I remember cringing when I read about my drama’s with friends and boyfriends at the time and the immaturity of my thinking made me discard all of them.
Journaling and mental health
Now I am an adult I still keep journals. Journaling, I think is very good for your mental health. Writing your thoughts down can help you work through emotions. Just like saying something out loud can be liberating after thinking something through. Writing can become a commitment to yourself once you have thought your thoughts through on paper. My writing has always given me clarity when I have been confused or conflicted about something in my life. Its been my form of self care and my way of goal setting for my future. I use journals as dream boards, filling them with pictures, quotes from people or books, lines from movies or song lyrics that resonate with me. They are also filled with recipes or some research I have done.
How do you Journal?
Of course journals can mean different things to different people, some people don’t use books they use white boards, or pin boards, or they write online in a word processing program. There are various apps you can use as well to journal your thoughts. Pinterest is an online journal where you can pin ideas, recipes, fashion and quotes. I am a massive Pinterest fan! If you don’t have it, you can check it out here – Pinterest
If you prefer to use a book like me you can check out our range of journals Shop journals here
I’d love to hear if you use journals or write? I always have a number of journals going at the same time, I always have one beside my bed and in my hand bag, study and sometimes in my car.
Happy Journaling!
